History

On Wednesday March 16, 2022 Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre met with Dr. Cato T. Laurencin at his office and acknowledged Dr. Laurencin’s well published work in the field of Medicine and Regenerative Engineering. The Prime Minister congratulated Dr. Laurencin on receiving the Saint Lucia Gold Award earlier that day from H.E. Governor General Errol Charles.

Dr. Laurencin expressed his profound gratitude to the country for the award. He expressed his love and appreciation for Saint Lucia, notwithstanding that he was born in America of Saint Lucian fatherhood. He expressed his strong desire to help his homeland, Saint Lucia. Dr. Laurencin proposed two national initiatives which he believes will bring tremendous benefits to Saint Lucia in the years ahead:

  1. An academy of Science, Technology and the Arts: and

  2. An Institute of Regenerative Engineering.

Dr. Laurencin informed that there are three basic steps to establish a National Academy of Science, Technology and the Arts:

  1. Create the legal framework and register the institution

  2. Select the members to startup, both living and deceased renowned persons; and

  3. Create a plan and launch the entity.

By Cabinet Conclusion dated December 09, 2024, the Government of Saint Lucia approved the establishment of the Saint Lucia Academy of Science, Technology, and the Arts as a non-profit, independent academic institution in Saint Lucia. The governance framework of the academy was also approved.
